Yours truly at the sarcophagus graveside of actress Mary Pickford. Forest Lawn Memorial Park – Glendale.

Welcome to my world the names Josh I’m 32, and live in suburban Detroit, Michigan. This blog pertains to one of my favorite yet morbid or interesting hobbies depending on who you ask and that is “Grave Hunting”.

To give you a general summary of what grave hunting is. Grave Hunting, is the hobby where people such as my self, have an enjoyment of being in a cemetery, to photograph, or in some cases video record the gravesites of anyone who was famous, notable, and noteworthy. Grave Hunters, usually have a passion for the various forms of architecture, and history, found in the cemeteries they visit. Grave Hunters also have a fascination if not obsession for when a famous, or an otherwise notable person passes away.

There is a scientific word for grave hunting. The scientific terminology is Taphophile, another closely used word is Taphophilia. The word Taphophilia should NOT be confused with the word necrophilia which is the sexual attraction to corpses. There IS a difference.

Anyway getting back to my biography. Having an interest in organized crime and being a yearly visitor to the cosmopolitan city of Chicago. I originally started visiting the grave sites of notorious Chicago gangsters.  I have an extensive list which keeps growing of gravesite locations of Chicago gangsters  I’ve had privilege of visiting over the years and who I plan to visit in the future.

With a growing interest in history of all forms. And also residing in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area with a rich and enchanting history of its own (Detroit). I soon ventured to various cemeteries in and around the Motor City. After months of online research with the help of various websites. And several hours on a monthly basis spent at the Detroit Public Library main branch downtown looking through microfilm rolls of old newspaper obituaries and death notices. I soon took off into a world of historic Detroit with my own personal way of interpreting history by visiting the grave sites of the well-known, the infamous, & sometimes famous, personages of  Detroit’s yesteryear.

The reason I created this blog was so I could showcase many of the graves, and cemeteries I’ve visited in the form of photographic and in some cases video graphic methods of interpretation. While also binding together well thought out and informative  reviews on grave hunting related books, & grave hunting & celebrity death related  DVDs. Not to mention the helpful tips & tricks for a better and enjoyable grave hunting experience.

Currently I’m making a name for my self in the grave hunting world. By connecting with others who share the same pastime as my self, and doing what I do best. The only downside with living on the east coast is that most of my friends who are fellow grave hunters/cemetery enthusiasts live  in the greater Los Angeles area. In due time I hope to move to California. If your into cemeteries, celebrity death, grave sites of famous or notable people I’d really love to hear from you to do some networking.

Other things I enjoy doing in my spare time include but is not limited to: smoking cigars (I can’t get enough of the mild ones), doing historical research for various projects I’ve gotten my self involved with, surfing the net, hanging out with friends, doing lots of reading. I’m mostly into books related to (Military History, Organized Crime, Celebrity Death, Famous Murders, etc). I enjoy collecting grave hunting & general death related literature for research purposes in the form of books, death certificates, and things of that nature.

If you have questions or comments about The Gravecast Blog. Perhaps you have some constructive feedback you’d like to give? I always welcome questions, comments, and constructive feedback, in a civil manner, to hopefully make things better on the blog. You can email me at cigarjosh89@gmail.com. If you do email me, PLEASE put something related to cemeteries, or grave hunting in the subject box. So I don’t discard your message. I usually reply in a prompt friendly manner.

When I’m not grave hunting, or doing research. I’m usually working my rear end off as a freelancer in the TV/film industry in the Detroit area. I’ve got an IMDb profile which highlights some of the local projects I’ve been involved with and currently working on. If you’d like to see my profile on the IMDb website feel free to click here.

    Hi Josh-

I just found your YouTube site through Lisa Banks’ Facebook posting and I think it’s great!! Isn’t it amazing how there are so many Michigan folks into this stuff? (Lisa is from the White Lake area and, btw, Scott Michaels is from Ferndale, if you didn’t know).

Anyway, I was wondering if you have an RSS feed set up for your blog? I’m on LJ (I don’t post as much as I used to) and follow a lot of cemetery folks over there and would like to be able to follow you as well!

    Keep up the great work,
    Bob Topping

Hey Bob, thanks for the comment its much appreciated. Yeah I knew Lisa Burks was from around here and now lives in LA. I also knew Scott was from the Detroit area but wasn’t sure which part. Scott usually comes back to the Detroit area around the holidays I haven’t had a chance to meet him yet as I usually find out he’s been in town after the fact. I’m seriously looking forward to the next time he comes back to Detroit or when ever I make it out to LA and take his infamous tour lol.

As for me I’m fine tuning my skills as a grave hunter here in the Motorcity. I plan on relocating to California sometime within the next 5 to 6 years I’ll probably start out in Sacramento as that’s where my sweetheart lives then we will hopefully work our way down to LA. The only thing that’s keeping me from moving out there is the high cost of living and me being out of work.

Hi Josh, I began my grave hunting adventures in LA on none other than Halloween, 2003.
Being at the crypt of Marilyn Monroe was like being in the presence of Royalty. I’ve been to most of the star cemeteries since my first visit then and the 4 times I’ve returned, but the one that stands out was the encounter I had at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Culver City on Friday, January 28, 2005.
As I was searching (in vain) for the grave of Mr. Jimmy Durante, I happened to look to my left and I saw, standing about 30 yards away, a young man who looked to be in his late 20’s gazing at me. It was around Noon. He was a white male, about 5′ 10′ with thick, black well kept hair. He was wearing a long sleeve, white dress shirt and black suit pants. He looked at me in such a way that I thought he was annoyed with me or just curious. I took my eyes off of him for approximately 3 seconds while I got my bearings once again and then glanced back his way to give him a smile and a wave. Much to my puzzlement, though, he was gone. I scanned the area where he had been standing and he was nowhere to be found. In the particular area in which he’d been standing there are no trees and there is absolutely no way possible that he could have gotten out of sight so quickly unless he’d had a jet engine strapped to his back. One moment he was out in the open, the next, he was gone! My puzzlement became astonishment as I realized it was a ghost I saw. This ghost, however, looked slightly familiar, but I just couldn’t place him. About a week later, after I had returned home, I started scoping out the Find A Grave website for celebs graves I’d missed. I clicked on one name and as I looked at the face of the actor there, I gasped! Before me was the very face of the ghost I had seen in the cemetery. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I saw the ghost of Vince Edwards. Who was Vince Edwards? In the 1960’s he was best remembered as Dr. “Ben Casey”.

Thanks for your comment. That’s a really fascinating, & cool story about your ghost sighting. Holy Cross is a great cemetery to visit. I’ve been to L.A. twice and plan to return soon.
